History
Swedish tournaments in English Scrabble have been arranged since early 2005. An English section of the Swedish Scrabble Association (SSA) was formed in June 2005, with Greger Nässén as its contact person.
There is a history page where you can select the results of Swedish tournaments in English Scrabble played so far (from the Sedan turnering drop-down list). The current rating list is found here. (Select Engelsk and click Visa.) A number of pages at our website are only available in Swedish, and a number of the English pages have not yet been transferred to our new site.
Swedish National Scrabble Championships (NSC) have been arranged every odd year since 2007. These players have been Swedish champions:
- Gunnar Andersson at 2007 NSC in Stockholm on 5 May

- Daniel Domert at 2011 NSC in Solna on 22 May

Representatives from Sweden have competed in the following World Scrabble Championships (WSC) and its successors. In 2013, WSC was replaced by Scrabble Champions Tournament Invitational (SCTI) in Prague. In 2015, the international Scrabble association WESPA arranged for the first time WESPA Championship (WESPAC), a tournament similar to previous WSC, in Perth, Australia:
- Mårten Björkman at 2005 WSC in London
- Greger Nässén at 2007 WSC in Mumbai
- Marc Roddis at 2009 WSC in Johor Bahru

Terms for the Swedish qualification process for world invitationals are found here.
Rules, equipment and tiles
The Swedish Scrabble rules of the SSA also apply to English Scrabble tournaments in Sweden. The only difference is that regular match time is 25 minutes in English games instead of 30 as in Swedish ones. You can play English Scrabble with a Swedish board and rack. English tiles are necessary, however, since the letter distribution and tile values differ markedly from the Swedish game (see below). The SSA have a number of sets of English tiles that tournament arrangers can borrow.
Dictionaries and word lists
On 1 January 2022, CSW21, the 6th edition of Collins Official Scrabble Words (ISBN 978-0-00-852388-6), took over as the official wordlist for tournaments sanctioned by the international Scrabble association WESPA. The first tournament in Sweden to use CSW21 was the Swedish NSC 2023.
Previous wordlists (not complete):
2001-14 May 2007
Chambers Official Scrabble Words International Edition was used in international tournaments. It contained all acceptable words with 2-9 letters plus inflections. To check longer words, you needed standard dictionaries from Chambers (UK) and Merriam-Websters (US).
15 May 2007-31 December 2011
International tournaments used Collins Official Tournament and Club Word List (abbreviated CSW 2007 or CSTCWL). CSW 2007 was a corrected tournament edition of Collins Official Scrabble Dictionary (OSD) from 2005, which contained a large number of errors and was not approved for sanctioned tournaments. The first tournament in Sweden to use CSW 2007 was Eyes Open 2007.
1 January 2012-14 September 2015
International tournaments used Collins Official Scrabble Words, 3rd and revised edition (abbreviated CSW12). The first tournament in Sweden to use CSW12 was Tea Cup 2012.
15 September 2015-30 June 2019
CSW15, the 4th edition of Collins Official Scrabble Words (ISBN 978-0-00-758916-6), became the official wordlist for WESPA-sanctioned tournaments. CSW15 contains 276,663 words in total (161,417 2–9 letter words). There are 6,500 new words (4,171 with 3–9 letters), no new twos, and no words have been deleted compared to CSW12. The first tournament in Sweden to use CSW15 was the Swedish NSC 2017.
1 July 2019-31 December 2021
CSW19, the 5th edition of Collins Official Scrabble Words (ISBN 978-0-00-832012-6), took over as the official wordlist for tournaments sanctioned by the international Scrabble association WESPA. The book is divided into two sections: first words with 2-9 letters, then words with 10-15 letters. CSW19 contains 279,496 words in total (162,542 2–9 letter words). There are 2,862 new words (617 with 2–8 letters) and 29 words have been deleted compared to CSW15. The first tournament in Sweden to use CSW19 was the Swedish NSC 2019.
Tips for beginners
As a Swedish beginner you will manage quite well with your school English. Learning the different tile values and distribution just takes a while. The only thing you need to study as a novice are the two-letter words with hooks, and also unusual three and four-letter words. We have compiled a number of useful training lists (not yet transferred to our new web site) based on CSW12.
The book The Scrabble Player's Handbook contains much useful discussions about strategy and more.
You can play English Scrabble on a number of sites on the Internet, for example:
- International Scrabble Club (ISC). Free of charge. Very popular. Based in Romania. Partly command-based user interface which can take some time to master. No forum.
- Quadplex. Swedish-based pay site with chat and forum.
- Lexulous. India-based site (previously called Scrabulous) with chat and forum. Also available on Facebook.
